Justin Barfield

M.F.A. University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, 2013

B.A. Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, LA, 2009

Born in southern Louisiana, Justin Barfield received his Bachelor of Arts at Southeastern Louisiana University and his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Notre Dame. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally including the Urban Institute of Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the South Bend Museum of Art in South Bend, Indiana, The Reece Museum in Johnson City, Tennessee, the eighth, ninth, Durban Gallery in Durban, South Africa, the 3rd Global Print 2017 in the Douro region of Portugal, and Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, Indiana. Justin has lectured on his work at Southeastern Louisiana University, Indiana Wesleyan University, the Hannah House at the Mid American Print Conference, Delta State University, and presented at the 2017 FATE Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

Justin’s artwork focuses on changes associated with ‘place’ in the postindustrial landscape. In particular, the changes brought about from human neglect, complete systematic failure, and economic and natural devastation. He finds inspiration by researching and responding to the physical changes located within these derelict landscapes. These landscapes consist of deserted factories, abandoned homes, devastated environments, and decaying material.

By articulating the same ideas through different visuals approaches, he continues to understand his stance in regards to these landscapes. Although his reaction is mostly of curious sorts, he has a deep personal connection with these types of spaces. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the home he grew up in and the B.P oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico directly affected the Louisiana seafood industry where he was employed. Because of this, he is aware of how one’s surrounding can rapidly decline.

New Grounds Workshop and Gallery in Albuquerque, New Mexico represent Justin’s artwork.
