Uhlman's research focuses on sustainability, social design and innovation with inspiration and experimentation from off the grid living and the DIY maker culture. She has worked for over 15 years for varied clients from corporate fortune 500 companies, to non-profits and more recently small startups in the realm of design, research, strategy and innovation. She is also the founder and director of The Unit 2 Collective, a not for profit organization that supports designers from varied genres and regions in community building endeavors, projects and exhibitions prioritizing the goal of dialog, innovation, environmental awareness, and social change.
Uhlman is driven by the human centered design integration of consumer desirability, business viability and technological feasibility to facilitate innovation within organizations and create solutions that help people and the environment. Uhlman holds a BFA in Industrial Design from The University of Illinois, Chicago and a Masters of Design Methods from the Institute of Design at The Illinois Institute of Technology.
At Notre Dame she integrates this diverse experience from the professional world with a focus on entrepreneurship, craft and small-scale product development, empowering students to bring their ideas to life and directly to people. In addition to managing the model shop and teaching, Uhlman is also pursuing her own startup Hearth & Market, a mobile farmers market and food truck that will bring healthy food and artisan products to people conveniently within their own community.
