Lecture: Edgar Heap of Birds

-

Location: 217 DeBartolo Hall

The Department of American Studies Spring 2011 Lecture Series presents:

Bill Anthes, Associate Professor of Art History, Pitzer College
"Edgar Heap of Birds at Home and Abroad: Ethics in a World of Strange Strangers."

*Free and open to the public

For over three decades, Cheyenne-Arapaho artist Heap of Birds has maintained a disciplined practice in multiple genres, including abstract paintings, tersely political textual messages, and public art interventions based on historical research. This lecture considers examples from across the artist's diverse body of work to examine how Heap of Birds creates an art attuned to issues of landscape and community, acknowledging past and present claims to sovereignty or nationhood, as well as patterns of human and non-human collectivity which define places and environments.
