Video: English and Design Major Interns with HarperCollins

Author: Todd Boruff

“I feel like I’ve been learning so much all the time, especially what it takes to be in the publishing industry,” says senior English and design major Katie Heit.

Heit was an editorial and design intern with Greenwillow Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers in New York, during the summer of 2013. Her day-to-day duties included entering final artwork and text corrections as well as creating final PDF documents to send to printers. She was also able to participate in design and marketing meetings, discussing everything from new jacket covers to the promotion strategy for new titles. “Being here has just confirmed that this is what I want to do with my life.” says Heit.

Heit received a grant from the Arts and Letters Summer Internship Program and says that she “definitely couldn’t have come to New York without it.” The program provides funding to sophomores and juniors who take internships in the U.S. and abroad.

“It really allowed me to live out my dream for a summer and I’m so grateful for the opportunity,” says Heit, who will return to Greenwillow to work as an editorial assistant after graduation.
