During the summer of 2013, Notre Dame graphic design major Stephanie Wulz interned at Radio Flyer, a Chicago-based toy company founded in 1917, best known for its red wagons. Her duties ranged from editing international packaging to creating prototype boxes for products.

“This internship has given me a really deep understanding of what goes into packaging design, from where the text lies, to the images,” says Wulz, a senior from Ramsey, N.J. “How does it look on the store shelf compared to others? What makes it pop? These are all aspects of design that I had never really considered before.”

Wulz received a grant from the Arts and Letters Summer Internship Program (ALSIP), which provides College of Arts and Letters students with funding to defray cost-of-living expenses for both paid and unpaid internships in any industry or geographic location. In the four years since it began, ALSIP has given more than $400,000 in funding to approximately 200 students in the College.

The grant program “has been really beneficial,” Wulz says. "I don’t necessarily know if I would have been able to come out to Chicago without it.”

The internship, she says, was valuable both personally and professionally. “Being able to see what you like and what you don’t like, where you fit in, and where your strengths are in the workplace is really interesting. I’ve learned a lot about what I want to do, but also a lot about myself.”
