The University of Notre Dame’s Visual Communication Design (VCD) program seeks applicants for a Research Associate position. The Research Associate position is modeled after a Postdoctoral appointment and responsibilities include three primary areas: facilities management, undergraduate teaching, and creative research. This one-year position (10 month term) is renewable annually for up to three years. The VCD program, located within the College of Arts and Letters, grants BA, BFA and MFA degrees. The University of Notre Dame, ranked #16 in US News & World Report’s National Universities Rankings, is a private, liberal arts university located in South Bend, Indiana.

Duties of the selected applicant:

  • Manage and maintain building facilities, including computer labs, printing stations, digital monitors, and the Cregg Commons exhibition gallery

  • Share programming responsibilities with design faculty such as supporting the student AIGA chapter, helping with searches and orientation for prospective VCD graduate students, and assisting with studio tours and the Annual Alumni Design Conference

  • Instruct one course per semester in a VCD-related area such as typography, packaging, environmental design, or design for social good

  • Advise and direct graduate and undergraduate design students through structured courses, seminars, and posted office hours

  • Set example for graduate teaching assistants preparing to teach future courses

  • Direct and promote Notre Dame students’ involvement in design research through public display, participation in national competitions, industry participation, publications, or conference presentations

  • Retain active affiliations with professional organizations

  • Pursue creative research interests

  • Aspire, via collaboration within and outside the University, to retain Notre Dame’s reputation for excellence through designing for a worthy purpose, promoting design as a tool for social change, and improving the human condition

Requirements for the ideal job applicant:

  • Holds a terminal MFA degree in graphic/visual communication design

  • Commands a range of proficiencies in typography, web/interactive design, and professional practice

  • Has documented past success teaching VCD related courses

  • Understands and uses ethnographic, qualitative, and quantitative research methods

  • Has professional experience in graphic/visual communication design

  • Demonstrates proven organizational, visual/verbal communication and presentation skills

  • Participates in project planning and curriculum planning

  • Desires campus-wide cross-disciplinary collaboration
