Biography
Emily Beck manipulates and re-contextualizes aspects of our identity that are often hidden within the layers of human communication. Beck’s work considers the complexities that come with self-awareness. Using video, photography and sound she captures experiences of emotional vulnerability, unrehearsed performances, systems of belief, and methods of connection and understanding.
After graduating with dual degrees in studio art and art education, Beck worked as high school art educator in North Carolina public schools for several years- leaving to pursue her MFA at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A focus on art as a powerful tool for visual communication is a common thread between her studio practice and her teaching.
