Sana Khan

Biography

Sana Khan is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Visual Communication Design at the University of Notre Dame. Sana received her M.F.A. in Visual Design with a concentration in Gender Studies from the University of Notre Dame and has now evolved into a UX Designer.

Prior to graduate school, she was working at Ogilvy, an advertising agency, as a Jr. Associate Creative Director on the Coca-Cola Company portfolio. Her experience at an advertising agency has played a crucial role in forming her design philosophy - great design is experienced - and became the foundation of her Design Thinking skills. At Ogilvy, while working on the Coca-Cola Company portfolio, she was able to have a deep understanding of the design thinking process as she learnt brand storytelling, communication strategy, creative problem solving, importance of target audience and concept development.

Sana further developed the frameworks she practiced at Ogilvy, and used it to make informed design decisions as she worked as a UX Designer for a non-profit organization, Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development. Sana is also currently serving as a judge for Adobe Creative Jams which is a contest that features Visual and UX Design projects from students across the globe.

Sana has been teaching at the University of Notre Dame for the last four years now. As a part of her graduate studies, she taught Fundamentals of Visual Communication Design, Interaction Design and Software Labs which included tutorials of Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and XD. She is currently teaching Digital Media Design and Motion Design.

Sana’s research focuses on using design to address social concerns. Throughout her graduate studies, she deconstructed the stereotypes of women that exist in Pakistan's contemporary collective imagination.  Her thesis discussed the origins of these stereotypes, the role colonisation played in their formation and their looming effects on young Pakistani women.

Sana is also a recipient of the Liu Institute for Asian Studies Research Grant as well as Snite Museum’s Director's Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts. Sana continues to pursue design for social good through her classroom and ongoing UX design projects.
