Richard Gray

Biography

Richard Gray is an artist and photographer whose works have been displayed in over sixty solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally for 40 years. His early projects investigated the landscape as both a condition and a place, for which he received a National Endowment for the Arts regional fellowship, and Indiana Arts Commission fellowships. The majority of his creative career at Notre Dame focused on exploring photography’s representation of human identity and the dialectic relationship between the visible and sub-visible aspects of our lives. His work utilizing microscopes to photograph human cells or thermal cameras to record the phenomenon of body heat, repositioned these trusted conveyors of information as complex provocateurs redefining our understanding of what it means to be photographed. A few exhibition highlights include exhibitions at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, the U.S. Government Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA, Pingyao International Photography Festival, Pingyao, China, and the International Fototage Exhibition, Ludwigshafen, Germany. His current project, Diaphanous, explores micro-climates in the Pacific Northwest.

Richard Gray served on the AAHD faculty for thirty-nine years, nine as department chair, and is former Chair of the National Board of Directors for the Society for Photographic Education.
