There are many different types of facilities and resources to support student coursework, independent research, and cultural engagement on the Notre Dame campus and in the surrounding region. Exhibitions, performances, films, and many other cultural events all serve to enrich the artistic and intellectual life of the local community.

Riley Hall

Riley Hall has been the home of AAHD since 1983. The building primarily serves the studio art area with studios, labs, and classrooms that support a nationally competitive range of media disciplines and degree programs.

Digital Printing Studio

221 Riley Hall

The Digital Printing Studio (DPS) features desktop and wide-format, pigment-based archival quality printing on state-of-the-art Epson inkjet printers. The studio utilizes Apple workstations and has Epson flatbed scanners for documents and film. Computer monitors are color calibrated with 5000K “daylight” room illumination to ensure accurate color control and print viewing. Primary software: Adobe Creative Studio, iLife, Microsoft Office.

The DPS is staffed full-time to provide user assistance. Fees are based on the paper type and size used. 

Students no longer need to have a reservation to use the DPS, but the reservation system is still in place for anyone who wants to reserve a printer. To access the reservation page, send your NetID or class ID to the DPS coordinator. This reservation system can only be reached while connected to the university's wifi, eduroam, or the campus VPN.

Note: Please reserve a time slot under the proper category. There are 3 different reservation pages for the DPS. One normal 6-slot reservation page, titled "digital print studio" for the six computer/print stations in the middle of the room, another reservation page for the two scanning stations, titled "scanners," as well as a reservation page dedicated to the two large format printing stations, titled "large format."

Please note: a valid Notre Dame ID with Domer Dollars is required for payment. Department charges require a completed form with a Fund Organization Account Program Activity Location (FOAPAL) number and faculty signature.

Metal shop and foundry

101 Riley Hall

The Riley Hall metal shop is fully equipped with stationary power tools for the fabrication of sculptures in steel, bronze, and aluminum. The metal foundry is equipped to pour small and mid-sized castings in bronze and aluminum. Our foundry students employ lost-wax, resin sand, and traditional casting processes.

Stationary power tools used include: MIG Welders, TIG welder, oxy acetylene rig, forge, cutoff saw, drop-down band saw, upright band saw, drill press, ironworker, Hossfeld bender, slip roller, finger brake, sand-blasting cabinet, portable sand blaster, Gantry crane, and forklift.

*This facility is for students currently enrolled in a sculpture course.

Multimedia studio

211 Riley Hall

The Multimedia Studio (MMS) is a specialized production studio with Apple 5K iMac workstations capable of video and sound editing, graphic design, and animation. This studio is the principal workshop for courses taught in the College of Arts & Letters. It is also open to all faculty and students in the College with a need for multimedia production facilities for research or teaching. The facility is not staffed. Users must have knowledge of multimedia hardware and software tools or make arrangements for someone to assist them with their projects. 

The MMS is a secured facility with access available 24 hours a day. Faculty may schedule the studio for classes or research and are advised to do so at least one week in advance by contacting the CCG. Students may schedule the studio for the current week beginning each Monday. This includes individuals awarded Media Design Grants through the CCG, who are developing course projects or instructional technology. 

In order to gain access to the Multimedia Studio, faculty and students are asked to fill out the studio request form and accept the terms and conditions listed within.

Photo imaging studio

The photo imaging studio supports instruction and research in the Department of Art, Art History & Design. This studio was designed to facilitate the photography program's transition from film to digital imaging technologies. The facility is equipped with 15 Apple Macintosh workstations with color-calibrated wide-screen displays. The central seminar room is equipped with an LCD flat-panel display for lectures, critiques, and multi-media presentations.

The lighting studios located in Riley Hall offer students a fully outfitted, professional-level facility for coursework and research projects. Each studio provides lighting equipment, seamless backdrops, iMac computer with wireless camera tethering, and a dedicated Canon camera kit. Photography students also have access to our photographic equipment cage that provides 24-hour checkout of camera kits, lenses, portable lighting kits, and a wide range of imaging-related accessories.

Printmaking studios

316 and 318 Riley Hall

The printmaking studio, located on the third floor in Riley Hall of Art, supports printmaking applications, including stone lithography, photolithography, copper plate etching, relief, serigraphy, letterpress, papermaking, and book arts. The studio is well-lit and spacious, providing an inviting atmosphere for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students to create prints regardless of any experience. There is also a paper-making mill with molds and deckles, tanks, pigments, and a hydraulic paper press for paper-making applications.

Wood shop

114 Riley Hall

The Riley Hall wood shop is fully equipped with modern stationary power tools and portable power tools and traditional hand tools capable of performing a wide variety of woodworking operations.

Stationary power tools include: table saw, band saws, miter saws, panel saw, drill press, mortising machine, router table, lathe, stationary sander, spindle sander, and jointer planer.

West Lake Hall labs

West Lake Hall was renovated in 2011 to meet the needs of the design program. It provides most of the space needs that design requires with studios, labs, and classrooms that support a nationally competitive design program.

2D computer lab

The Westlake 2D design studio primarily supports visual communication design instruction and research in the Department of Art, Art History & Design.

The lab also requires pin entry (provided by instructor). If you are currently enrolled in a course taught in West Lake Hall and cannot access the building, please contact the main office.

3D computer lab

The Westlake 3D design studio supports industrial design instruction and research in the Department of Art, Art History & Design.

West Lake design studio

The West Lake design studio is a production facility featuring a wide range of tools for developing 3-dimensional prototypes, final presentation models, and products in a variety of materials. The shop is equipped with modern stationary power tools, portable power tools, and traditional hand tools capable of performing a wide variety of operations with wood, composite, and plastic materials. Stationary power tools include a table saw, band saw, miter saw, panel saw, drill press, and sanders. The shop also has a spray booth available for painting and several digital fabrication tools including a laser cutter, CNC router, vacuum former, and 3D printer. 

Digital fabrication lab rates

  • Laser cutter – $2 for every 10 minutes of use.
  • 3D printer – $1 for every 10 minutes of use.
  • CNC router – $2 for every 10 minutes of use.

*Minimum Charge $2/10 minutes and charges will be in intervals of 10 minutes.
The services are only available to students enrolled in art and design courses.
