Everyone is invited to attend Erin Hinz' talk, "Mermaid Pinch: Investigating Identity and Sexual Subjectivity within a Gendered System," this Friday 11/15 12:00-1:00 in 339 O'Shag.
"Hinz’s paintings and drawings investigate themes of identity, gender, and sexual subjectivity. More specifically the work is informed by Judith Butler’s philosophy of gender and sexuality and current feminist concerns regarding social change, which as bell hooks concedes,” ...is intimately linked with the desire for pleasure and erotic fulfillment.” The significance of this discourse within the context of Hinz’s paintings is simply that a sense of entitlement of one’s body, including one’s sexuality and bodily pleasure, as a right, can serve as a standard for the capacity to know and demand other rights. The work is intended to offer alternative ways of thinking gender and sexuality under the present conditions. The presentation will give an overview of her work through the lens of “gender performance” theory and the politics, expectations, and discontents surrounding sexuality."
Erin Hinz is a Painting MFA Candidate in the Department of Art, Art History, and Design with a Graduate Minor in Gender Studies. Erin Hinz received her B.F.A. in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute and her M.A. in studio art from Eastern Illinois University. Her work has been featured in a variety of exhibitions and online publications including the 2013 MFA Biennial at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, the 25th Annual McNeese National Works on Paper, and Figure50.com.
