How to prepare to study abroad

  • All sophomore students who plan to study abroad must attend the mandatory study abroad meeting held in late September/early October by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. If you did not attend this meeting, or did not receive an email to attend the meeting, please contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies
  • Students must receive preapproval from the DUS for the courses they plan to take abroad to count towards their major
  • Students can apply up to two courses (6-credit hours) from an outside institution to their major (study abroad OR transfer credits from summer school)
  • Art history majors and minors can count one course (3-credit hours) towards their major or minor
  • Art history majors who study at Notre Dame London or Notre Dame Rome can count one course (3-credit hours) towards their major AND one course (3-credit hours) towards a departmental elective
  • Studio or Design BA majors can count one course (3-credit hours) towards their major and one course (3 credit-hours) towards a departmental elective
  • Studio or Design BFA majors can count two art history courses (6-credit hours) towards their major and one course (3 credit-hours) towards a departmental elective
  • Rome and London are great options for art history majors/minors
  • Copenhagen and Athens offer design courses for industrial design and visual communication design majors
  • Some study abroad courses have been pre-approved for credit at Notre Dame London or Rome—this can be assessed by looking at course catalogs in Novo
  • Studio art minors must complete their studio art courses at the main campus
