This exhibition examines the formation and scope of the Butkin Collection at the Snite Museum of Art. The Butkins were at the forefront of the art historical re-evaluation of realist, naturalist, and academic painting in the 1970s, championing nineteenth-century French paintings and drawings by artists as diverse as François Bonvin, Théodule Ribot, Antoine Vollon, Léon Lhermitte, Gustave Colin, and Georges Vibert.

The exhibition consists of about eighty works including a selection of paintings and works on paper the Butkins' donated to The Cleveland Museum of Art and is accompanied by an illustrated catalog edited by guest curator Gabriel P. Weisberg and distributed by the University of Washington Press.
